It is thought that at Chidambaram, Kharasura prays to Lord Shiva. Seeing how much Kharasura cared, Lord Shiva gave him holy Shiva lingams. This made sure that Kharasura would always be in these lingams. Shiva told Kharasur that if he wanted Moksha, he should honour them. Then he held one lingam in each hand and put the third one in his mouth, and he moved from the Himalayas towards the south. Later, as he headed south, he got tired and stopped at Viakom to rest. When he woke up, he saw that it was still in the same spot. So he put the other two lingams where they belonged.

Architecture

Vaikom Temple is one of Kerala’s biggest temples, and it was built in the traditional way of Kerala. There are five prakarams and four towers in the temple. In one of the towers, a huge Nandi is made from a single stone. The oval-shaped sanctum of this temple is topped by a copper-plated roof with a golden Kalasam on top. There are two chambers: the main hall, called the Mukhamandapa, is made of wood and stone, and the second room, called the Garbha Griha, is made of stone and has a square roof. Shiva Linga is six feet tall and is made of pure black stone with Chandrakala designs on it. While the outside of Sreekovil is covered with statues made of wood and stories from the Puranas.

Festivals

History

The legend says that when a few local chieftains went to see the yearly celebrations at the Koypallikarazhma Bhagvati Temple, they were attacked by the temple’s leaders. So they came up with the idea of building a temple at Chettikulangara. The Karanavars then agreed that it was their duty to do bhajan for 12 days and ask Goddess Kodungallur Bhagavathy to bless them. People say that Devi gave them “Swapna Darshanam” and the next day, they went back to Chettikulangara with a holy sword that the Velichappadu of the Kodungalur temple had given them. Another story says that Padmapadacharya, one of Adi Shankaracharya’s most important students, promised to build this temple on the Uthrittathi day of the Makara month in 823.

Sub-Deities of the Temple

There are a number of sub-gods, or Upadevathas, near the temple. They are:

The other part of the Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple is the Kuthuvilakku, a huge oil lamp. This lamp is made of rock and has a very large number of wicks. The temple is well-known for its events, which have drum music, bright colours, and traditional dances that are only done there.

Fairs And Festivals

In February and March, there are a lot of big parties and gatherings. The first is Bharani, which happens during these months and brings the whole temple and big feasts to life. The second is the Kumbham event, which is a time of fun and merriment. During this event, a lot of tourists come to this place because it is known as the Kumbha Mela of the South. Kuthiyottam and Kettukazhcha are two well-known dances from this event. Kuthiyottam is performed as an offering to the god, and Kettukazhcha shows carved and decorated forms of six temple cars called “Kutiras” and five “Therus” with images of Hanuman and Bhima. Ethirelpu Ulsavam and Aswathy Ulsavam are two other events that happen in February and March.

History of the Temple

The Mullakkal Temple is 500 years old, and there are many legends about how it got started. According to a legend, the soldiers of the Thekkumkur King brought the idols to this temple. All of the idols were meant to be put in a jasmine garden, but Devanarayana, the king of Chembagasery, built a temple in the garden instead. Another story says that when Tipu Sultan attacked Kerala, a group of Namboodiri Brahmins ran away from the Malabar kingdom and took the lucky statue of Maa Annapurneswari with them. The group then found the jasmine garden, and this is where they chose to build the temple. Before 1961, the main shrine had an image of Mata Annapurneswari. When the statue was later put in a jasmine garden, it was called Mullakkal Bhagawthy. People think that a person with a mental illness went into the inner sanctorum and hugged the idol. After that, cracks were found in the idol’s body. Later in 1962, an idol of Rajarajeswari was made and put on the shrine. The old statue was then taken away because it was broken.

Architecture of the Temple

This Mullukkal Rajarajeswari Temple is made in the style of old Kerala buildings. It has a well-kept wall, a beautiful pond, and lots of trees and jasmine plants on the property. The temple’s statue of Durga Maa has four arms and is known as ‘Mullakkal Devi’ or ‘Mullakkal Amma’. At the moment, the temple is run by the Travancore Devaswom Board of Kerala. It has an open roof, but about 20 feet of it are covered at the door. According to an old custom, elephants are kept in this roofed place, which is used to bring the goddess’s “thidambu” to important events.

Festivals

There are two big celebrations at this temple. They are:

The last two days of the Navarathiri Festival are called Vijayadhashmi and Mahanavmi. The festival lasts for nine days. On the last two days, a parade of nine painted elephants is a big part of the celebration.

History

In the 18th century, this house was built by the King of the State of Travancore. There are lots of other buildings that are a great mix of traditional and western styles. In 1950, the Archaeological Department of the state rebuilt the current house and a three-story building in the same area. It was fixed up in a modern way by using scientific methods for protecting old buildings. The Bible in Sanskrit was written in Kolkata in 1886. The museum has a copy of that Bible.

Architecture and Collection

The palace is a great example of this type of architecture because it has narrow passageways, low ceilings, balcony windows that stick out, etc. At the moment, the palace is a museum of ancient artifacts that is looked after by the Archaeological Department.
