Alappuzha Lighthouse, which is 150 years old and stands tall, is near the Sea Bridge and 4 km from the town of Alappuzha in Kerala. It was built in 1862 and was one of Kerala’s busiest ports and trade hubs at the time. On the south-west coast of India, it is one of the oldest lights.

History
The building of the lighthouse began when Marthanda Varma II was Maharaja, and it was finished when Rama Varma was Maharaja of Travancore. The first stone was put in place here on April 26, 1860, by the wife of the port officer, Huge Crawford. On March 28, 1862, the wife of the resident, Francis Newcombe, Ms. Francis Newcombe Maltby, opened the building.

Features of the Alappuzha Lighthouse
The Alappuzha lighthouse is made of laterite stones and teak wood. Before 1952, it had a double-wick lamp that ran on coconut oil. After that, a 500-mm drum optic and DA gas light were put in its place. Then, in 1960, the old equipment was replaced with a straight drive system and a 300-mm emergency light. In 1999, the 230-volt metal halide lamp was finally taken out of use.
