Two Types of Rasayana Chikitsa

There are two types of Rasayana therapies. They are – Vatatapikam and Kudipraveshikam, The Kudipraveshikam treatment is to be done with meticulous precision and is very strict in its process and diet. This is done under the guidance of an expert. This treatment is also known as Kayakalpam. The important processes related to this treatment are completed in a hut that is surrounded by walls. The hut is specially designed to keep wind and light from getting in. The duration ranges from two months to four months. Usually, adults in the age group of 25 years to 70 years can undergo this treatment. However, it is conditional and can only be done if concerned person is free from any major health problem.

The Vatatapikam process is somewhat less demanding and places less dietary restriction when compared to the procedure involved in Kutipravesha. Vatapikam is usually prescribed for people who find it difficult to follow a prescribed diet and for those who are in a weakened condition because of some illness. The medicines used for Vatapikam procedure are generally selected by the doctor based on the actual condition of patient’s health. The duration of this procedure ranges between 21 days to 60 days.

Many herbs are chosen and used in Rasayan Chikitsa procedure like : Varahi, Kashmari, Bala. The following herbs are also added to the diet to improve tissue and organ strength. Pippali, Lasuna enhance the respiratory system and give strength to the tissues, Haritaki – purges waste from the body while improving digestion. Brahmi, Vacha, Shankhapushpi, Madukaparni – increase memory and intellect. Guggulu – helps in furthering the process of digestion and removal of toxins. Amlaki – slows down the catabolic process whereby it delays ageing. Bhallataka – has a powerful substance that develops immunity power which overcomes rheumatoid arthritis and some malignancies as well. Punarnava, stimulates functioning of the kidney. Shatavari , is used for treating infertility while improving libido. It is also helpful to deal with menopause and promotes lactation in lactating mothers. Pravala, Kapichacchu, Suvarna, Chyavanprasha and Vardhaman pippali rasayana are the other herbs used in the process of Rasayana Chikitsa.
