With people across the globe infected with Corona virus, it has indeed become an economic and social threat.

In Wuhan, China, the very first Corona virus case surfaced in 2019. Presently, it has managed to spread significantly to South Korea, Italy and Iran including India and the U.S. The W.H.O (World Health Organization) on 11th February 2020 had declared the current situation to be pandemic and named the disease ‘COVID-19’. It is also popularly termed as ‘2019-nCoV’ or ‘2019 novel coronavirus’. The term ‘COVID-19’ has the letters ‘CO’ meaning ‘corona’, ‘VT; meaning ‘virus’ & ‘D’ for disease. This outbreak as declared by the WHO is ‘public health emergency with great international concern’. Primarily, declaration was because of the concern of the virus causing major blowout in those countries suffering from poor health systems.

The article is not meant to make any claims to provide perfect cure to those infected with coronavirus. Rather, the common belief is that following Ayurveda and Yoga, it can help develop better immunity as well as reduce kapha. This way, the body is made less prone to get affected with coronavirus.

Is coronavirus a contagious disease? How it spreads?

Firstly this is not any airborne disease. But this communicable virus does spread easily with mucus droplets through air released by mucus and respiratory track by the infected patient as he/she talks, breathes, sneezes or coughs.

Who needs to take great care?

Attending medical staffs and doctors are required to be much more vigilant as they deal with infected patients as the chances of them contracting this disease are very high. Also people with low immunity such as old people, pregnant woman and small children might get affected.

Symptoms & signs

Both human beings and animals are likely to get affected with corona virus. Several nervous and respiratory symptoms are noticed like giddiness, pneumonia and common cold. The respiratory system when affected could fail. Vital organs in severe cases like brain, liver and heart functions could get affected.

On getting infected, the symptoms of Coronavirus may show up in about 2-14 days. Hence, what are the typical symptoms and signs?

Respiratory system: Few symptoms may emerge like cough, sore throat, breathlessness, headache, running nose and tiredness. With regards to critical cases, patients may suffer from septic shock, respiratory failure and/or multiple organ failure/dysfunction.

Digestive system: Abdomen pain combined with vomiting and diarrhoea.
Muscular system: Body ache and fatigue.

Nervous system: Demylination may be caused by Coronavirus in the central nervous system, while the body and brain experiences impaired coordination. Source

Immune or Lymphatic system: Fever

Mild cases might resemble bad cold or flu. But people might pass on the virus unknowingly even before symptoms are experienced.

General precautionary measures to be taken

The best way to avoid getting infected by such epidemic threats is to take extreme precaution than wait for cure. The Local Public Healthcare segments and the W.H.O have provided valuable guidelines like:

Wash hands frequently for approximately 20 seconds.

Do not touch your face with hands.

Do not travel unless deemed emergency.

If going out in public place to travelling, use mask.

Do not panic or spread unwanted rumours pertaining to the disease.

Can Yoga & Ayurveda help to deal with this current epidemic?

Yoga & Ayurveda have managed to stay focused towards preventing diseases prior to treatment. According to traditional science, it is necessary to focus on the body’s inner immune system and also take external precautions.

Ayurveda

Corona Virus as per Ayurveda tends to disturb Kapha and Vata dosha equilibrium. Hence, Pitta vardhak diet is recommended, which is to simulate pitta until Vata and Kapha dosha is well balanced with better lifestyle. As given below, making some changes in food habits is sure to help restore back the essential body functions.

Consume vegetables like Fenugreek as it absorbs abnormal kapha.

Drink plenty of milk and turmeric powder.

Include spices in food like turmeric, ginger and garlic for assimilation and to stimulate taste.

Avoid cold drinks, cold food and ice creams.

Consume fruits like lemons, oranges and papaya.

Intake of Rasayana herbs such as Giloya kwath, Ashwagandha and Dashmul kwath does help to enhance internal immunity.

It is necessary to take Ayurvedic medicines, as prescribed by experts like Sitopaladi Churna, Draksharishta, Talisadi churna & Yashtimadhu with honey and Khadiradi vati which are chewable tablets.

Ayurveda Therapy

Abhyanga: Applying oil all over the body and massaging properly helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and enhances blood circulation. Moreover, its calming effect offers better metabolism balance.
Herbal steam: With herbal fomentations, fats get detoxified, thereby reducing body weight. It also increases digestive fire, thus stimulating metabolism.
Nasya: It develops better immunity by cleaning sinuses and nasal track.
Niyama: According to guidelines. This is to maintain better personal conducts.
Shaunch: Maintaining of environmental and personal cleanliness. Drink only boiled water and clean vegetables thoroughly before cooking and fruits before consumption.
Svadhyay: Get to know the symptoms associated with the disease. Do introspect as well as seek medical help at the earliest.
Diet: Consume plenty of vegetarian and Satvik food. As per an article posted in the ‘Times of India’, it is completely safe to consume seafood in India, since no link still has been established between coronarvirus and seafood. Scientists are still trying to explore the link that exists between coronavirus and bat & snake. “The only crucial thing which you require to take proper care of is to ensure hygienic and full cooking of the meat and not consume it half-raw or uncooked. This way, animal meat transmitted disease can be avoided.”
Lifestyle: Stay in warm regions, be stress-free, sleep well and walk regularly.

Yoga Asanas

Performing different types of bending and twisting postures does help the lymphatic system to get strengthened. There is a need to release secretions arising from the body’s lymph glands.

Shashankasan: This is a sitting posture, where forward bending helps to release lymph toxins effectively from body, thereby improving immunity.
Padahastana: This is standing posture where forward bending helps to release lymph toxins effectively from body to improve circulation. Paschimottanasana does help posterior expansion of the chest.
Sarvangasana: This is supine posture, where body and legs are to be raised upwards till shoulder region. It helps to release toxins from the lower limb portion and out of the body, thus reducing pressure upon the lower body.
Matsyasana: On completion of Saravangasana pose, do perform fish pose. This complementary posture provides equanimity, while taking care of other body parts like the neck.
Dhanurasana: This is prone posture, where you need to lie on your abdomen and twist both hands and legs backwards to resemble your body similar to a bow. Likewise several backward bending asanas are present like snake pose (Bhujangasana), camel pose (Ushtrasana) do help to increase muscle and chest cavity elasticity, strength and volume.
Meditation: This is strongly recommended in meditative posture. The spine and chest is offered adequate space, thereby resulting in healthy breathing process. Mental cleansing is offered with healthy breathing.
Finally, we are to respect our Mother Earth, while practicing Ishwar Pranidhan, meaning surrendering self to God to benefit human kind as a whole.

Finally, you have to Sullener Yourself to the almighty God, Spend more time in Prayers and doing good.

The chaotic pace of daily work and life can be a difficult thing to handle. Here at A Better Workplace with Ayurveda, we offer advice for a harmonious work, life balance through the practice of Ayurveda.

All of us came for the first day at work with excitement and eagerness to achieve something. But as time passes, for many it becomes stressful to even think about work because of the many hurdles that have to be overcome not to forget finding the time for daily sustenance and some much-required rest. Whether you are enjoying your work or are feeling pressured by it, finding your work, life balance is essential to get the creative juices flowing and for problem-solving to come naturally. This will help you feel good and also spike your Productivity and Efficiency when at work.

The very first thing you need to do to incorporate Ayurveda into your work is the right attitude. Simply be thankful for the work you have, whatever it may be. Just remember what your job is giving you such as your daily bread and maybe even something for the satisfaction of the seeker in you. Gratitude is an attitude that can energise you with its sheer positivity. So start with this gratitude list. In case you feel that this is not where you want to be by all means pursue your dreams., But until then this job is paying for the bills. That’s why we definitely need to take a look at how Ayurveda can make your experience at work better and give you an advantage in your workplace.

Recharge with a meditation break: The best place for meditation is a quiet place away from people. Possible places you may use when at work would be like a conference room or any other such private place. Make it happen by booking a convenient daily slot of 10 minutes right in your calendar.

Bring your lunch: Why spend money and eat food that does you no good? Make a lunch kit with the food you enjoy, that is full of with nutrients your body needs and keep saving those dollars for splurging on the things that make you happy like a purse or stilettos.

Work in 90-minute blocks & take breaks: This idea is adapted from the book The Power of Full Engagement. Exerting yourself for a long time can be tough on your body and mind. Refresh yourself by taking a 10-minute break every 90 minutes. In this break, walk in place or across the hallway and activate blood circulation. Or you could play your favourite music and recapture that good feeling back. This will help you to become more focussed and improve performance when you get back to work. It will also offer you a motivation to complete tasks as we have the next break to look forward to.

Understand the personality Doshas: Everybody is different. We each have our weaknesses and strength. So be respectful of each other’s difference and The insights Ayurveda can give you by learning about the doshas in various personalities may be of great use here. This will help you see the whole person instead of just the random person whom you are forced to work with.

Plan for the day ahead: The morning time is Kapha time and people with Kapha dosha are followers by nature. It will be helpful to get a head start on the day. So write your to-do list at the end of each day and have it ready so that it keeps prodding you on through the day. It saves time and helps you make the most of the time you have a hand.

Move around: Everyone knows that exercise is good for us. Let us understand it from an ayurvedic perspective. Exercise helps blood circulation to reach our tissues and pumps up the fire element or agni in us. Stair climbing and walks are popular but you can always try something different like getting a standing desk to light your fire!

The Herbal Tea Habit: Keep herbal teas at hand. Have a nice bouquet of flavours that you can choose from and share them with you’re your colleagues. A little sharing makes for long-lasting and strong interpersonal relationships even at work! If you like it sweet, don’t forget to bring the honey!

Take Aroma Therapy With You: Stock a few Aromatherapy options ready for use. Aromatherapy can elevate the dull office environment and soothe your nerves after any stressful event. Use a spray from a bottle of rose water when you want something cooling and capable of removing negative energy. Lavender can be used to relieve stress. You can apply it on wrists or behind your ears. Grapefruit or citrus scents are used for energising. It can be applied on wrist, throat or dab a little on your handkerchief. These are light and popular scents which many love so it won’t be objected to.

One state in India that fascinates travelers to visit at least once in their life time is Kerala. Tourists can enjoy the opportunity to experience the state’s rustic charm and cruise on traditional houseboats referred to as Kettuvallam. Its backwaters are considered to be a natural beauty featuring riverine estuaries, exotic waterways and pristine lakes, thereby creating along the coast an intermeshed network.

Kerala has been showered with plenty of gifts by nature and perhaps is the very best in India. One among them is the scintillating backwaters which sparkle like diamond upon the state’s face. Their exceptional beauty combined with astounding tranquility is what has made them greatest attraction for tourists. The backwaters also have a played a significant role to boost tourism, thereby contributing towards the country’s national income.

The backwaters here are not only charming, but also is stated to be among the major source of income for majority of the population of the state, since they depend upon vegetation and marine life. The backwaters also are interconnected series of waterways, riverine estuaries, inlets and lakes, thereby forming enmeshed network along Kerala’s coast. Few popular backwater destinations here include Kozhikode, Cochin, Mararikulam, Kumarakom and Alleppey.

Alleppey

Kerala backwater tour takes tourists to Alapuzza, popular for organizing boat races, lakes, variety of fishes and marine life, coir products, etc. Being adorned by the surrounding canals and beautiful waterways, this place is rightly termed as ‘Venice of East’ and also home to Kuttinad – considered to be the country’s Rice Bowl. Farming here is down below sea level, thereby being one of the few places across the globe to do so. Kuttanad is also an exotic backwater destination.

Kumarakom

Its backwaters are quite enticing and the tour allows you to explore the luxurious paddy fields, local agricultural site dotted with fishing villages and coconut trees. You also get the opportunity to visit the well known Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, attracting tourists due to its diverse, rich wildlife, flora and fauna.

Mararikulam

The backwater trips can be enjoyed in the traditional country boat which introduces you to those age old fishing villages, located besides the sea with groovy coconut trees in endless rows.

Kochi

It is undoubtedly the most preferred of all backwater destinations, considered to be the ‘Queen of backwaters’. Most backwater cruises organized tend to start or end here in Cochin. The guided cruise will take you across the winding waterways to different strange places, thus making the trip completely memorable. Moving through Vallarpdam Island, Gundu, Vyppin and Bolgtty provides you with the opportunity to come across local fishermen using Chinese Fishing Nets, reminding traders of the past having come here for business purpose.

Kozhikode

The tour can help you to transverse through the luxurious backwaters here and take you to destinations which are still to be explored by tourists. Backwater cruise can offer you with happy and memorable journey moving through Canoli and Kallai river.

Ayurveda is referred to as knowledge of life. Ayu means Life and Veda stands for Knowledge. In India, Ayurveda is being practiced for over 1000’s of years. Lord Vishnu’s avatar, Lord Dhanwantri is revered and considered to be ‘God of Ayurveda’. Ayurvedic origins can be found in Arthaveda, comprising of 114 hymns describing about treatments and medicines for chronic and acute ailments affected in human beings. The objective of Ayurveda is to maintain the individual’s social, mental and physical health. It also aims towards balancing the person’s spirit, body and mind.

Ayurveda rather emphasizes upon leading healthy and fit life and be tuned with nature. It comes with a holistic approach, focusing upon natural healing derived through available natural resources. Mankind in ancient India was entirely dependent upon Home remedies or on Ayurveda. But major decline pertaining to Ayurvedic practices was witnessed during the medieval era. With Muslim and British invasion, the aftermath only became worse as these invaders did not heed Indian values associated with sciences or life here. Western science and learning became popular in India with the coming of the British. Ayurveda got into a headstrong fight with western doctors and scientists who probably nullified its value, since it lacked proves and experiments.

Still, Ayurveda has managed to survive and has been healing different types of ailments successfully. Indians are dependent upon such age old practices to treat innumerous diseases. Ayurvedic disease is found to work on the disease right at its root. These days, Ayurveda has been categorized under alternative medicines. Earlier, it was considered to be the available option to cure different types of ailments. There are many people who are quite skeptical about availing allopathic medications, since medicines like antibiotics and steroids come with unwanted side effects. But the achievements made by western medical sciences cannot be ignored. There are diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, depression and others that may quickly and easily heal using meditation techniques and herbs.

Three rudimentary substances are present in Ayurveda, considered to be Tri doshas (3 problems), namely, Kapha, Pitta and Vata. Even if one of them tends to imbalance, then it is likely to cause diseases. The Ayurvedic Practitioner would first analyze the patient’s pulse to check if any of the doshas are imbalanced. Several Ayurvedic hospitals have come up that offer treatments to cure different ailments. Indians in huge numbers prefer to avail Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala as this place offers tranquility and beautiful and mesmerizing natural environment.

Few Ayurvedic Therapies are:

Panchkarma: To detoxify the entire body, there are 5 bio-cleansing procedures.

Pizhichil: This is an oil treatment. Here, medicated oil drops are squeezed onto the patient’s body. It helps to improve blood circulation and cures body pain.

Ayurveda and Yoga both evolved from India and have been practiced in the Indian sub-continent for centuries. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning the science of life (Ayur/Ayus = Life, Veda = Science). It is not just the knowledge of life but a complete way of life. This ancient art of healing provides a traditional and natural way of curing ailments. It has been perfected by great saints and forefathers, who trust nature and believe that it holds all the solutions for good health. The medicines are prepared from natural and organic materials making it the only totally eco-friendly medical science known to man.

The origins of Ayurveda dates back to the period when the Vedas (the oldest available religious texts of the world) were created. This traditional Indian system of medicine deals with the concept of “mind, body and spirit” for the maintenance of health and relief from disease. It emphasizes on exercise, yoga, meditation, and massage.

Basic Principles

Ayurveda says that the human body is composed of five elements or Pancha Mahabutha, namely Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Ether (Space). These 5 elements combine to form three primary life forces or biological humors (Tridoshas) that govern the body, known as Vatha, Pitha, and Kapha. Vatha pertains to air and space elements and deals with movement-related activities within the body. Pitha pertains to water and fire and governs metabolism. Kapha pertains to water and earth and is responsible for growth and protection. Proper health and well-being depend on the proper balance of these three life forces. An imbalance can cause a state of unhealthiness or disease.

The Ayurvedic treatment is known for its ‘Panchakarma’ therapy, which includes nasal medication, purgation, emesis (therapeutic vomiting), blood letting (detoxification of the blood) and cleansing enemas. There are a total of eight branches of Ayurveda treatment, namely:

• Kaaya-chikitsa (Internal medicine / general medicine)
• Salakyam (Treatment of diseases above the clavicle – teeth, eyes, nose, ears, etc.)
• Kaumarabhrtyam (Paediatrics)
• Agadatantram (Toxicology)
• Shalya-chikitsa (Surgery)
• Bhuta vidya (Demonic possession)
• Rasayanam (Anti aging and building immunity)
• Vajikaranam (Aphrodisiacs)

Ayurvedic Treatments

Ayurvedic therapies work on the processes of ‘Tonification’ and ‘Reduction’. As said earlier, an imbalance in the Tridoshas or humors of the body causes health problems. Tonification methods nurture insufficiency in the body while Reduction therapies reduce excess dosha in the body. Reduction therapies are further categorized into two types

‘Pacification’ (achieved with herbs, fasting, exercise, sunbathing and exposure to wind)

‘Purification’ (special therapies for elimination of the disease-causing humors).

Ayurvedic treatments in India offer a number of therapies specially designed for the treatment of different kinds of disorders/diseases. A few most popular therapies are Pizhichil, Njavarakizhi, Sirodhara, Sirovasthi, Snehavasthi, Nasyam, Tharpanam, Lepanam, Dhara, Avisnanam, etc.

Ayurveda is practiced in various Ayurveda Hospitals in various parts of India. The most popular place for Ayurvedic treatments in India is Kerala, followed by a few regions in north India. The tropical climate and natural abundance of medicinal plants and herbs in Kerala make it the best choice for availing Ayurvedic treatments. Kerala is believed to be the only state in India which practices the Ayurvedic system of medicine with complete dedication.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease (a disorder in which the immune system becomes overactive and attacks the body’s own cells and tissues). It causes thick patches of inflamed skin which are covered in silvery scales.
The overactive immune system leads to the rapid growth of new skin cells, which form in days rather than weeks. The new cells build up quickly on the skin’s surface, forming the characteristic thick patches and scales.
On light-colored skin, the patches are pink and covered with whitish scales. On darker skin, it looks purplish with grey scales. It usually affects elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, palms of the hand, soles of the feet, and may also affect genitals.
There are five types of psoriasis that affect adults and children. Plaque psoriasis is the most common covering about 80%; the other four types are guttate, pustular, inverse and erythrodermic.

Psoriasis Indications:

Most people suffering from psoriasis complain of itchiness when it affects their scalp, palms or soles of their feet.

Most common symptoms are

Skin with raised inflamed patches (called plaque)

Whitish-grey scales covering the patches

Itchy and painful skin, or skin that may sting or burn

Patches that may have fissures or cracks and bleed

Fingernails and toenails that look similar to nail fungus (pitted, cracked, thickened or crumbly nails)

People suffering from this skin disease may also be affected psychologically, as indicated by the higher rates of depression, anxiety and substance abuse among them. When the patches and scales appear in visible locations, patients may feel self-conscious and withdraw socially.

Causes, risks, and triggers

Though the causes are unclear, an overactive immune system and genetic as well as environmental factors may be responsible. A family history of psoriasis and certain viral or bacterial infections can increase chances of developing psoriasis. Psoriasis is not contagious and doesn’t transmit via touch.

Psoriasis may also be incited by skin trauma due to burns, animal bites or even tattoos.

The following factors may cause flare-ups, which cause the condition to worsen for a few weeks or months.

Viral or bacterial infections such as strep throat or skin infections. Children may experience flare-ups two to six weeks after tonsillitis, earache, bronchitis or respiratory infections.

Skin injury due to cuts, scrape, sunburn, etc

Stress can trigger the first flare-up or aggravate the existing skin condition

Use of certain medicines such as antimalarial drugs, beta-blockers, and lithium.
